Details
A century ago, it would be common to see duplexes, triplexes, and small apartments coexist with single-family homes throughout La Crosse. This is called “missing middle” – housing types that offer multiple units at a modest scale within existing neighborhoods. These days? It’s harder to find.
On this tour, we’ll wander through the Weigent-Hogan and Washburn Neighborhoods to explore examples of missing middle housing. What can these neighborhoods teach us about potential solutions to the city’s housing crisis? Come and explore the overlapping histories of housing development, zoning, and neighborhood change.
Please wear comfortable footwear, bring water, and dress appropriately for the weather.
This tour is point-to-point. We will begin at the northwest corner of Cass and 9th Streets and end at Weigent Park. The tour route is about 1.5 miles, and the walk from Weigent Park back to the starting point is 0.5 miles. There is ample street parking and bus stops near both the start and end points.
